Literature for Action Research

What are best practices to support daily iPad use?

In my previous post on developing Action Research for iPad Use, I described the steps involved in the process of action research.  During the first stage of Planning includes looking at what others have found to be successful or not based on the topic.  A literature review of businesses, schools, districts, and nations initiatives can be found here, with a look at successes and failures of their initiatives.  By looking at these, a fully developed plan can be made of how to best research what are best practices to support daily iPad use.

A highlight of the few of the resources found are:

Johnson, L., Adams, S., and Cummins, M. (2012). NMC Horizon Report: 2012 K-12 Edition. Austin, Texas: The New Media Consortium.

A NMC Horizon Report showing the trends of 2012. There are more recent editions, but this one focuses on the growing trend of school purchases of personal learning devices, and the number of students with their own tablet, smartphone, or laptop that is used in school. This report covers current, soon to be current, and forward thinking trends of educational technology in schools.

Jimmieson, N. L., & White, K. M. (2011). Predicting employee intentions to support organizational change: An examination of identification processes during a re-brand. British Journal Of Social Psychology, 50(2), 331-341. doi:10.1111/j.2044-8309.2010.02005.x

A series of studies on how a varied amount of businesses were able to undergo change and have their employees accept the change. It looks at the psychology of change, and acceptance of the change. It brings light into what employees will and will not due to support a changeover.

Elkeles, T., Phillips, J. J., & Pullman, P. (2014). Measuring the Success of Learning Through Technology: A step-by-step guide for measuring and ROI on e-learning, blended learning, and mobil[sic] learning. Alexandra, VA: American Society for Training & Development.

An explanation of the best ways to measure the success of investment of change. It has a well-developed explanation of return on investment. It also gives some ideas on some specific models of determining success when change or learning is occurring.

Bollinger, S., Exner, N., & Spruill, O. (2015). Trying to measure success. Library Technology Reports, 51(7), 9-15.

A case study of iPad initiative at a college library. Looking at the success and failures of the initiative and what was learned from the initiative. There is a good chunk of focus on the type of measurements, and how successful was each type of measurement. There is also a brief look at employing the Kaplan’s and Norton’s Balanced Scorecard approach. Looking at aspects from financial to innovation of an initiative.

Casey, A. M. (2015). Grassroots strategic planning: Involving library staff from the beginning. Journal Of Library Administration, 55(4), 329-340. doi:10.1080/01930826.2015.1038935.

This article looks at what was learned with the planning of the improvement of a library, and how buy-in occurred from the library staff. It describes how using a bottom up, and clear communication increased the success of the initiative and change within the library.

As I am looking for best ways to support the daily use of iPads, the literature is being used to support this research. I am looking for details on ways to support initiatives and encouragement of staff to change. Not listed here are also articles on the use of iPads in the classroom, and the shift of teaching with technology integration. I did not find information on student-focused support or administrative focused support. I would think this kind of support, not just the support of teachers would be beneficial to utilize iPads on a daily basis. Maybe that kind of research could be looked at next.
