OVERVIEW

“Collaborate, Learn, Change” is a look at the current need for change to how education is done.  Collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking are skills employers are looking for in new hires.  A call to action is made for students to stop being passive consumers, but producers and developers of their own learning.  Showing in video and images students experiencing this type of learning on the iPad.  The short-film calls educators to join in this transformation, to collaborate, to learn, to change.

MOTIVATION

As a part of my “Enhancing Educational Opportunities with iPads” innovation plan, I want teachers and students to be creative, collaborative and develop a deeper learning experience.  This was the motivation of this short-film.  To express what I see as a need for new ways of learning and experiencing school to occur.  It was designed as a call to action.  An in-depth personal narrative of the need for change to the current learning environment.

BACKGROUND

“Collaborate, Learn, Change” is a digital story.  To create this story I looked at previous examples of both what a well-designed story is constructed and other school’s iPad initiative videos. The digital storytelling videos centered on the need for finding the deeper story.  Also to tell the story with not only words but with images and sounds.  School iPad initiatives show how school and student learning would change.  Shifting from a teacher-centric model to an engaged student-centric model.  Changing the perception to what a student knows, to how do she know it and how will she show the learning.  I used these video and other readings to guide the design and feeling of the video.  The videos that were viewed can be found here.

PRODUCTION

Production of the video was a learning experience.  I am a continual learner and took to this video as a way to challenge myself.  Camera work for the interview clips was done both with an iPad Air, on the front-facing camera, and a Samsung Galaxy 7 Active, for the side-facing camera, on stable stands.  The recording was done in a green screen room.  Finally, the interview filming was edited and formatted using Adobe Premier.  I did not have previous experience using Adobe Premier, but with several YouTube video and blog post, I was able to learn about using chromakey, blending camera work, and adjusting audio tracks.

Video and image clips, music tracks and final editing was done on YouTube Video Creator.  Although not as robust as Adobe Premier, YouTube Video Creator has royalty free music and easy to use drag and drop work sequence.

The constant desire to learn more, made me push my previous knowledge and comfort level.  This learning experience challenged me and is exactly that kind of experience that the video is pushing for with students.

CONCLUSION

“Collaborate, Learn, Change” is not a video about using iPads in the classroom, but a culture of change.  It is designed as a call to action to improve the learning environment for students, by increasing educator’s desire to learn more.  From this desire to learn more, it is my goal to encourage educators to learn how to use iPads to achieve a developed, learner-centered learning environment.
